By October 2015, all U.S. retail and restaurant businesses will be required to have the proper equipment in place to accept EMV Chip Cards. This is a major change from magnetic-strip credit cards to chip-and-pin cards, which are much safer. October 2015 is a key date because liability for counterfeit transactions will be shifting. If a consumer uses a card with a magnetic stripe for a fraudulent transaction on a terminal that cannot process EMV, the liability for the fraud will rest with the merchant due to failure of the merchant to offer EMV acceptance.
