Description
In 2012, the School District of Mishicot was awarded a Physical Education Program (PEP) Grant from the federal government. The grant’s funding is focused on reorganizing the physical education program to be aligned with state standards and help prepare students to lead active and healthy lives. To meet this goal there is an emphasis on helping students increase their health and fitness knowledge and form healthy habits.
The physical education program has various tools to assist students in meeting specific objectives, including the newly added cardio rooms and climbing walls which were purchased with funds from the PEP Grant.
The use of climbing walls and other high element activities was pioneered in the United State by Outward Bound, Inc. which is recognized world-wide for its adventure based approach to education, and the following four assumptions (North Carolina Outward Bound Handbook; Copyright, 1973) articulate the philosophy promoted by our program.
-
People have more resources and are more capable than they think they are.
-
A small heterogeneous group has the resources within it to successfully cope with significant physical and mental challenges.
-
Significant, long lasting learning can be achieved through an intensive short term experience.
-
One learns more when presented with problems rather than solutions.
The School District of Mishicot is proud to open these additions to their school facilities and thereby open new opportunities for students to maximize their potential and develop their leadership capacity.
