Description
Riverview elementary serves as one of the early learning centers for Manitowoc, currently housing 269 4K and 341 5K students. An outdoor classroom at Riverview has been created so teachers can incorporate outdoor learning and play into curriculum and provide opportunities for students to develop awareness of and appreciation for the natural world. Educators and child development specialists have written volumes on the importance of hands-on experience and play for young children. Today there is a growing body of research showing the importance not just of play, but this play taking place in an outdoor setting. Nature playscapes encourage creativity, problem-solving and self determination. Research has also found Outdoor Classrooms enhance children’s learning, behavior and developmental outcomes.
