Session 1: "Making the Most of Social Media"
Presented by: Jeff Dawson, Lester Public Library
About the presentation:
Acknowledging a small, dedicated staff at the Lester Public Library, Jeff took an active role in promoting the library via social networking tools available free on the internet. Dawson will provide tips and inspiration looking at a nine year journey, from Facebook to Twitter, which has netted certain results and recognition for Lester Public Library on local, national, and international levels. There will be plenty of opportunity for attendees to share experiences and tips utilizing LinkedIn, Snapchat, Instagram and more.
Jeff Dawson is the director of the Lester Public Library in Two Rivers. The Library was an early adopter of social media as a tool to reach out to the community. Lester Public Library has been on the front lines providing enticing online enhancements to their already popular in-house services. A goal for the library is to reduce the digital divide that exists in our community. As described by the popular online encyclopedia, Wikipedia - “The term Digital divide describes the gap in terms of access to and usage of information and communication technology, including the skills to make use of those technologies within a geographic area, society or community.”
Dawson holds a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, Illinois and a master’s degree from the School of Library and Information Science, University of Iowa, Iowa City. Dawson has twenty eight years library experience in a variety of libraries and levels of responsibility. He worked in academic libraries in Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, and Arizona. From 2000 to 2007 he served at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, Topeka, Kansas, in several capacities, including Reference Librarian, Business Librarian, Adult Services Supervisor and finally Manager of Youth Services and Bookmobile. Jeff’s exploration into social media and internet marketing began as Lester Public Library Director March 2007.
