Manitowoc WI., November 5, 2025 – Ascend Services, Inc., a leading non-profit that serves youth and adults with disabilities, is pleased to announce the appointment of Lee Thennes, Superintendent of Manitowoc Public School District, to its Board of Directors. He officially began his three-year term on June 10, 2025. Lee brings a wealth of experience to Ascend and will help guide the company in its mission.
“We are incredibly excited to welcome Lee Thennes to our board,” said Deanna Genske, Executive Director of Ascend. “He brings immense expertise in serving students, families, and communities in Wisconsin and a proven track record of leading district-wide initiatives focused on strengthening organizational efficiency, expanding student opportunities, and building strong partnerships with local businesses, higher education institutions, and community organizations, which we believe will significantly contribute to the continued success and growth of our organization".
Prior to his current role as Superintendent, Lee served as MPSD’s Director of Federal and State Programs and as Principal of Lincoln High School, where he supervised over 135 staff members, expanded Youth Apprenticeship enrollment, and partnered with Lakeshore Technical College and UW-Green Bay to provide students with early college credit opportunities—collectively saving families hundreds of thousands in tuition costs. He also held leadership roles at Wilson Junior High School and in the Sheboygan Area School District.
Beyond his school leadership, Lee has demonstrated a deep commitment to community service through his work on the Board of Directors for The Haven of Manitowoc County, as a Trustee of the Manitowoc Public Library, and in multiple elected and appointed roles with the City of Manitowoc.
Lee holds a Superintendent Licensure from Cardinal Stritch University, where he also earned his Master of Educational Leadership, and a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and History Education from Northern Michigan University.
