Manitowoc WI., June 17, 2026 – The Ascend Board of Directors proudly announces the appointment of its newest board member, a dedicated 34-year veteran first-grade teacher and enthusiastic community advocate with a deep, lifelong commitment to special education and local service.
Bringing an extensive background in both Elementary and Special Education, the new board member joins Ascend with a unique blend of professional expertise and deep personal experience. Upon the birth of their daughter, who was diagnosed with Down Syndrome, the educator and her husband experienced firsthand the overwhelming challenges of navigating a new path. Guided early on by local advocate Les Ann Halvorsen, the family found their footing, a foundational experience that inspires this new chapter of leadership.
"I hope Ascend continues to do good work engaging all ages of our population with different abilities," the new board member stated. "I am incredibly excited to join the board, and I look forward to hearing about the new programs being started through Ascend, as well as contributing to discussions and ideas for individuals moving through their adult years."
A primary focus for Sheila will be brainstorming and developing innovative social opportunities for the adult population, particularly evening social hours that foster connection, independence, and community.
Even in retirement, the new board member remains deeply rooted in local service and culture. Beyond occasional substitute teaching, they actively support Manitowoc’s unhoused community through dedicated volunteer work with Hope House, the local Warming Shelter, monthly community laundry days, and Friday lunches at First Lutheran Church. Their leadership also extends across the local cultural landscape, including active roles on the Symphony Board and the Friends of the Library Board.
Outside of community service, Sheila is an enthusiastic music lover who sings with both their church choir and the Capitol Community Singers, enjoys gardening, hunts for live music venues, and loves pizza. Known for operating with an infectious sense of enthusiasm, their guiding philosophy and favorite word is, fittingly, "JOY!"
Ascend welcomes this vibrant new voice to the board to help champion, expand, and innovate programs that empower individuals of all abilities throughout their lives.
