At the Manitowoc County Historical Society in August: Hometown History Expo, historic skill classes, and teacher workshop

 
Here's what is happening at the Manitowoc County Historical Society Museum and Pinecrest Village, 924 Pinecrest Road in Manitowoc, in August: 
  • Summer Garden Tour (MCHS Member Only); Wednesday, August 6 at 11 am; Come walk through our heirloom gardens (at their peak in the summertime!) with Historic Gardeners. They will be talking about heirloom vegetables, harvesting, herbs, everlastings, and deadheading. The tour is 60 minutes. Free for MCHS Members. 
  • Teacher Workshop; Thursday, August 7 from 9 am to Noon; he Manitowoc County Historical Society’s 2025 Summer Teacher Workshops are FREE, half-day programs focused on history, art, and science. Educators will learn about ways to incorporate MCHS’ collections, our historic Pinecrest Village, and stories of our local history into their curriculum. Free to attend. Advanced registration is required. 
  • Family Blacksmithing Workshop; Thursday, August 7 from Noon to 3 pm; This class will allow an adult/parent/grandparent to work with a child as they learn historic blacksmithing techniques in a historic setting. Everyone will get to make several small, hands-on projects, such as small dinner triangles and hooks, while learning about proper safety in a workshop environment. Advanced registration is required and fee charged. 
  • Hometown History Expo; Saturday, August 9 from 10 am to 4 pm; Our Hometown History Expo connects museum visitors with their local small museums, town historians, historical societies, and genealogy groups. Included in the cost of general museum admission, come out for a day of exciting local learning and participation in local history! Archives-themed workshops will also take place throughout the day. General admission. 
  • Items for the Home - Blacksmithing Workshop; Saturday, August 9 from Noon to 3 pm; Students will have the opportunity to make one of the following projects to enjoy: dinner triangle, candleholders, lantern/plant hooks, or fire pit poker. Small class size guarantees lots of one-on-one instruction and lots of time at the forge! Advanced registration is required and fee charged. 
  • Tram Tour; Friday, August 15 from 11 am to 1 pm; Hop aboard the Tram Tour with one of our MCHS volunteers as we explore the Historic Village! Skip the walking from building to building as the tram takes you from place to place. The expected duration of the tour is approximately 2 hours. Advanced registration is required. General admission.
  • Triumph and Tragedy: Evergreen Cemetery Historic Walking Tour; Wednesday, August 20 with tours at 3 pm and 5 pm; This 90 minute walking tour of Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc will highlight stories of triumph and tragedy in our community. Advanced registration is required and fee charged. 
  • Blacksmithing Basics workshop; Thursday, August 21 from Noon to 3 pm; The class is designed to give someone with little or no metal working skills as a hands-on, fun “be a blacksmith for a day” experience. Explore the basics of forge work in a blacksmith shop while making a decorative “S” hook or a bottle opener to take home. Advanced registration is required and fee charged. 
  • Community Craft Night; Thursday, July 21 from 5 to 7 pm at MCHS; Do you knit, crochet, sew, quilt, draw, paint, scrapbook, embroider, whittle, or anything else? Bring something to work on while you enjoy community engagement! Meet other crafters and artisans in your community, and maybe even pick up a new skill. Each month we will be bringing out a item from our archives collection to enjoy and inspire you in your own work! FREE to attend.

About the Manitowoc County Historical Society
Nestled in the scenic rolling Ice Age Kettle Moraine countryside of Eastern Wisconsin, the Manitowoc County Historical Society is a museum of living history. This 60-acre interpretive museum of local history features a Welcome Center with local history exhibits and research services and the outdoor Pinecrest Historical Village - a collection of over 25 historic buildings with period furnishings from Manitowoc County's early settlers. 
 
Pinecrest Historical Village began in 1970 with a land donation from the Hugo and Eleanor Vetting family.  The Village has grown to represent a reproduction of a small Wisconsin community during the early 1900s. The buildings form the commercial, social, and political core of a town and they represent several architectural styles of Wisconsin's history. The furnishings, items, and tools in the various buildings used by the Pinecrest Village interpreters are either original pieces or carefully researched reproductions.
