At the Manitowoc County Historical Society in June: World War I Encampment, Create-Connect workshops, and Maker's Market

 
Here's what is happening at the Manitowoc County Historical Society, 924 Pinecrest Road in Manitowoc, in June: 
  • World War 1 Encampment; Saturday, May 31, from 10 am - 3 pm and Sunday, June 1, from 10 am to 3 pm; Visit the camps of American, British, German, Russian, and Ottoman nations and learn about their role in the Great War. Various activities are scheduled for the weekend including camp kitchens on the front, weaponry, the Red Cross and more. Step into a display area focusing on Manitowoc County during WWI. General admission. 
  • Tram Tour; Thursday, June 12 from 11 am to 1 pm; Hop aboard the Tram Tour with one of our MCHS volunteers as we explore the Historic Village! Skip the walking from building to building as the tram takes you from place to place. The expected duration of the tour is approximately 2 hours. Advanced registration is required. General admission. 
  • Free admission for Fathers; Saturday, June 14 from 10 am to 4 pm; Fathers and father-figures receive free general admission. 
  • Beer and Wood-fired Oven Pretzels Workshop; Saturday, June 14 from 9 am to 1 pm; Many German immigrants settled in Wisconsin bringing their love of beer with them. Learn about the historical role of beer and discover how to make a pale ale using local ingredients sourced from Briess Malting in Manitowoc with the Manty Malters Homebrew Club.You’ll also make a savory treat - oven pretzels. While the pretzels are baking, the mustards can be made - and beer samples can be shared. Registrants must be 21 years of age or older. Advanced registration is required and fee charged.
  • Vintage Base Ball Match; Saturday, June 14; The Museum’s vintage base ball team, The Manitowoc County Amateurs, unpack their uniforms, brown balls, and double-knobbed bats to play in a 19th-century base ball game. They are carrying on a long tradition of base ball (as it was spelled in the 19th century) in Wisconsin. The Museum and Village is filled with all the ambiance of play in the 1860s—no gloves or other protective equipment, wooden bats and scoreboard, and top-hatted umpires. Join the fun by participating in a rousing pick-up game. Guests will get to field and hit with the team and learn how to play base ball by the rules of 1860s. Game Schedule: 12:15 pm- Play a family pick up game and learn the rules of 1860s ball; 1 pm- Manitowoc County Amateurs vs You, our visitors! (all ages and abilities are invited to join us to play); General admission.
  • Family Base ball workshop; Saturday, June 14 from 10 am to 12 Noon; Learn how to make a hand-made leather baseball. An adult and child pair will work together to cut out, stitch, and craft their own leather baseball to use for play. Advanced registration is required and fee charged.
  • Items for the Home - Blacksmithing Workshop; Saturday, June 14 from 12 Noon to 3 pm; Students will have the opportunity to make one of the following projects to enjoy: dinner triangle, candleholders, lantern/plant hooks, or fire pit poker. Small class size guarantees lots of one-on-one instruction and lots of time at the forge! Advanced registration is required and fee charged.
  • Union Park Neighborhood Historic Walking Tour; Tuesday, June 17 with Tours at 3 pm and 5 pm; This 90 minute walking tour of the Union Park neighborhood in Manitowoc will bring to life the architectural styles, places, and people that called this area home. Meet near the Rahr West Art Museum at 610 N 8th St, Manitowoc. Watch for our ‘History Lives Here’ sign.

  • Community Craft Night; Thursday, June 19 from 5 to 7 pm at MCHS; Do you knit, crochet, sew, quilt, draw, paint, scrapbook, embroider, whittle, or anything else? Bring something to work on while you enjoy community engagement! Meet other crafters and artisans in your community, and maybe even pick up a new skill. Each month we will be bringing out a item from our archives collection to enjoy and inspire you in your own work! FREE to attend.
  • The Road to Freedom and Emancipation; Friday, June 20 from 10 am to 2 pm; Explore the history and context around the Juneteenth holiday in the United States. Topics explored will include the history of racial injustice in the U.S., the Civil War and the limitations of the Emancipation Proclamation. Additionally, we encourage groups to explore the modern significance of Juneteenth and its long-term impact. This program is ideal for school-age children and part of our themed field trip opportunities. Advanced registration is suggested (save by registering!). Fee charged. 
  • Dine Fundraiser at A&W, Manitowoc; Wednesday, June 25 from 4 to 8 pm; Indulge in your favorite treat from A&W, whether it’s cheese curds or a root beer float, to support MCHS! Dine with us on Wednesday June 25 between 4 pm and 8 pm and 10% of the proceeds from your order will be donated to MCHS. 
  • Maker's Market; Saturday, June 28, from 10 am - 4 pm and Sunday, June 29, from 10 am to 2 pm; Join historic artisans for a celebration of Wisconsin’s rich folk life traditions! Experience the sights, smells, music, and craftsmanship in this juried event featuring artisans selling their wares and opportunities for hands-on creations. Discover a heritage craft, such as spinning and knitting. Explore heritage farm skills, such as wood-stove cooking and antique machinery. Watch specialty craftsmen such as blacksmiths, cobblers, and broom makers create their wares. General admission.

About the Manitowoc County Historical Society
Nestled in the scenic rolling Ice Age Kettle Moraine countryside of Eastern Wisconsin, the Manitowoc County Historical Society is a museum of living history. This 60-acre interpretive museum of local history features a Welcome Center with local history exhibits and research services and the outdoor Pinecrest Historical Village - a collection of over 25 historic buildings with period furnishings from Manitowoc County's early settlers. 
 
Pinecrest Historical Village began in 1970 with a land donation from the Hugo and Eleanor Vetting family.  The Village has grown to represent a reproduction of a small Wisconsin community during the early 1900s. The buildings form the commercial, social, and political core of a town and they represent several architectural styles of Wisconsin's history. The furnishings, items, and tools in the various buildings used by the Pinecrest Village interpreters are either original pieces or carefully researched reproductions.
