Here's what is happening at the Manitowoc County Historical Society Museum and Pinecrest Village, 924 Pinecrest Road in Manitowoc, in July:
- Kids Free Days: Thursdays in July from 10 am to 4 pm; Every Thursday in July, all kids 12 and under will receive free admission to the Museum! Bring out the whole family to experience history in action around the Village.
Each week will feature an exciting new theme in the Historic Village including (hands-on activities will take place from 10 am to 1 pm).
- Rosemaling workshop: Thursday, July 2 from 11 am to 3 pm; Participants will learn the history, techniques and cultural significance of rosemaling – a Norwegian decorative folk painting known for its scrollwork and floral designs – while completing their own project. The course includes professional instruction, hands-on practice and all necessary supplies. By the end of the workshop, participants will paint their very own project and leave class with the knowledge and a detailed supply list to continue this Scandinavian craft on their own! Advanced registration is required and fee charged.
- The Museum and Pinecrest Village will be closed on Saturday, July 4.
- History Summer Camp: Monday July 6 through Thursday, July 9 from 9 am to 3 pm each day; Age 6 to 12; With Pinecrest Village as the setting for adventure, campers are immersed in the lives and times of young people at the turn of the 20th century. Campers discover agricultural roots, sample Village life, and dive deeper into 19th century trades, skills, and traditions. Advanced registration is required and fee charged.
- Old Fashioned Fish Frydays: Friday, July 10 from 5 pm to 8 pm; Come hungry and thirsty as we enjoy classic Wisconsin dishes and drinks! Savor a fish fry, tasty cocktails and help support our mission to preserve local history. Dinner provided by Smiling Moose, Osman. Advanced registration is suggested.
- Females at the Forge Workshop: Saturday, July 11 from Noon to 3 pm;
Join us in the forge to learn how fire, metal and a hammer come together to create a decorative piece! Our experienced female blacksmith will teach you a few tricks of the trade in this special WOMEN ONLY edition of our popular introductory blacksmith class. Topics covered will include forge safety, tools, and fire building, and you will have an opportunity to work on a first project. No experience necessary! Advanced registration is required and fee charged.
- July Overnight at Pinecrest Village: Saturday, July 11 into Sunday, July 12 from 5 pm to 10 am; Bring your own camping tent and bag dinner then join us in our 19th century Meeme House for family-friendly experience, play historical games, and make your own historical crafts. Before camping out for the night, attend a guided tour in the 19th-century village, and sit beside a campfire to roast marshmallows and share stories. It’s the perfect opportunity to create lasting memories together! Advanced registration is required and fee charged.
- Blacksmithing Items for the Home Workshop: Thursday, July 16 from Noon to 3 pm; Students will have the opportunity to make one of the following projects to enjoy: dinner triangle, candleholders, lantern/plant hooks, or fire pit poker. Small class size guarantees lots of one-on-one instruction and lots of time at the forge! . Advanced registration is required and fee charged.
- Community Craft Night: Thursday, July 16 from 5 to 7 pm at MCHS; Do you knit, crochet, sew, quilt, draw, paint, scrapbook, embroider, whittle, or anything else? Bring something to work on while you enjoy community engagement! Meet other crafters and artisans in your community, and maybe even pick up a new skill. Each month we will be bringing out a item from our archives collection to enjoy and inspire you in your own work! FREE to attend.
- Wisconsin Historical Society - Northeast Regional Meeting: Monday, July 20 from 10 am to 4 pm; We’ll explore the big questions facing our sites about interpretation - on our grounds, in our buildings, and who should be in those discussions. Through firsthand accounts from experienced interpreters and museum professionals, you will gain insights into the power and challenges of living history, best practices, and strategies for overcoming obstacles. Advanced registration is required and fee charged.
- 1976 Throwback Week: Wednesday, July 22 through Saturday, July 25 from 10 am to 4 pm; Our Pinecrest Village exists in large part to the enthusiasm of the 1976 sesquicentennial. As we celebrate America’s 250th year, we are throwing it back to 1976 with a variety of activities, presentations, and prices! General admission throwback prices from 1976 include: $1 for adults, $.50 for youth age 12 to 17; and children under age 12 are free.
- Summer Family Camp: Wednesday, July 22 from 10 am to 3 pm; Age 4 and older; Spend the last days of summer with your family and a Museum Educator for a guided, behind-the-scenes adventure! Join us for a fun-filled day of History Family Camp, whether your little one isn’t quite ready to attend camp by themselves or you are just looking for a chance for the whole family to join in the camp fun. This one-day camp will focus on family-friendly 19th century-based activities. The day will include a flexible schedule; with some timed activities and some opportunities for families to freely explore our Living History Village. While this camp day is open to all ages, the majority of activities will be geared toward kiddos aged 4 to 9-years-old. Children must be accompanied by an adult, who is also registered for the program. Advanced registration is required and fee charged.
- 1976 Throwback Tours: Wednesday, July 22 through Saturday, July 25; times vary by date; Join Pinecrest Village staff for a guided throwback tour. Both walking tours and tram tour opportunities are available. For this special tour, interpreters will dress as the 1970s ‘interpreters’ did, sharing the recorded audio tour and focusing on the historic structures that were a part of our site at the time. Advanced registration is suggested and fee charged.
- Teen Blacksmiths Workshop: Thursday, July 23 from Noon to 3 pm; This class will invite teens to learn historic blacksmithing techniques in a historic setting. Everyone will get to make several small, hands-on projects, such as small cuff bracelet, dinner triangle, or hooks. Advanced registration is suggested and fee charged.
- Mid Summer Meltdown: Hot Rod, Custom Car, and Vintage Event: Saturday, July 25 from 10 am to 4 pm; Grab an ice cream and check out Traditional pre-1966 hot rods, customs, stock cars, trucks, motorcycles, and vintage fire engines. Listen to Rockabilly music while touring the historic Pinecrest Village. Take part in a vintage fashion show, Jello-contest, and youth ‘matchbox car, races. General admission throwback prices.
- Kolache Workshop: Saturday, July 25 from 11 am to 3 pm; Students of the class learn to make the kolache dough and filling to create the perfect sweet treat. Advanced registration is suggested and fee charged.
- Blacksmithing: The Great Outdoors: Saturday, July 25 from Noon to 3 pm;
Learn about historic blacksmithing techniques. You can choose between selected outdoor themed projects including lantern hooks or a camp tripod. Advanced registration is suggested and fee charged.
- Adult Field Trip: Thursday, July 30 from 6 pm to 9 pm; This after-hours, adults-only program features all those historic activities remembered from the nostalgic field trips of your youth – from blacksmithing to historic games – plus new experiences and the chance to enjoy a refreshing adult beverage from the Meeme House bar room. Advanced registration is suggested and fee charged.
