Here's what is happening at the Manitowoc County Historical Society, 924 Pinecrest Road in Manitowoc, in March:
- Dine Fundraiser at Port Sandy Bay (Two Rivers); Thursday, March 6 from 4 to 8 pm. Not that ordering a sno-coaster pizza, a fish plate, or a burger and cheese curds takes much arm twisting to begin with, but now there's an added reason to indulge. The Manitowoc County Historical Society and Port Sandy Bay have partnered together to raise money and awareness for our mission to bring the stories of our past to life. A percentage from each order will help support our local history preservation and education.
- Winter Weekend; Saturday, March 15 from 11 am to 3 pm at MCHS; Enjoy these winter weekends by exploring a handful of historic buildings in the Village, embrace the winter by snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or sledding, and enjoy the season! March will focus on fiber arts. Activities will include making a community quilt at the Dress shop, and weaving and spinning demonstrations, Bring your needles or Crochet and join in the Knit In in the Sorenson parlor. Winter Weekends are made possible in part by Bank First and Seehafer News. General admission.
- Wool spinning workshop; Saturday, March 15 from 12 Noon until 3 pm; We are learning how to spin custom yarn from fiber on a drop spindle with incredible fiber artist Carol Wagner, from Hidden Valley Farm and Woolen Mill. Learn the basics of spinning wool, a timeless skill that Wisconsinites have been doing for generations! Participants will get to feel the differences between different breeds of wool, hone their skills using a drop spindle, and take home yarn that they’ve spun themselves. The class includes all the supplies, including your very own drop spindle to take home. Advanced registration is required and fee charged.
- Planting a Garden and Finding Your Roots: Hungry for History Series program; Wednesday, March 19 at 11 am at Branch Station; The talk by Susan Apps Bodilly includes learning how to “think like a historian” by using primary source documents related to gardens to discover our state’s history. The inquiry strategy of “observe, think, wonder” encourages you to think in new ways, collaborate, and research our garden history. The presentation includes ideas for theme gardens, crafts, and ways to get started putting seeds in soil. Meal to follow presentation. Advanced registration is required and fee charged.
- Community Craft Night; Thursday, March 20 from 5 to 7 pm at MCHS; Do you knit, crochet, sew, quilt, draw, paint, scrapbook, embroider, whittle, or anything else? Bring something to work on while you enjoy community engagement! Meet other crafters and artisans in your community, and maybe even pick up a new skill. Each month we will be bringing out a item from our archives collection to enjoy and inspire you in your own work! FREE to attend.
- The Flag of Company A: Celebrating the Gift of the Century; Thursday, March 27 at 6 pm at the Manitowoc Public Library. After the Civil War era flag that was given to the Manitowoc County Volunteers came back home after quite the journey, James Anderson and other survivors of the company retained it in their possession until 1925. With just a few men left from the 5th Wisconsin, Company A, the flag was restored and gifted to the Manitowoc County Historical Society - where it remains as a symbol of our community. Join us as we reenact the ceremony that took place at the Manitowoc Public Library (then located at Chicago and North 8th Streets) for the Presentation of the Flag of Co. A, Fifth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry to the Manitowoc County Historical Society on March 23, 1925. Free to attend.
- Heritage Trades School; Saturday, March 29 from 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday, March 30 from 9 am to 2 pm; Join one of these weekend workshops to create and take home a project from one of our workshop options. Spend the weekend immersed in history and take a bit of 19th century life and learning with you when you go! Workshops include blacksmithing, dress making, and 19th century angling. Advanced registration is required and fee charged.
