Historical Society celebrates community with free weekend and local history expo

The Manitowoc County Historical Society Museum and Pinecrest Village, 924 Pinecrest Road in Manitowoc, will hold its Neighbor’s Free Weekend on Friday, October 16 and Saturday, October 17 from 10 am to 4 pm each day. Neighbor’s Free Weekend is made possible in part by WOMT 100 and Associated Bank.

Neighbor’s Free Weekend offers complimentary admission to residents of Manitowoc County. In addition to viewing the site’s historic structures, a Hometown History Expo and Cast-Iron Cook-off will also take place.

The Hometown History Expo will be part of the event on Saturday, October 17 from 10 am to 4 pm. Through this experience, guests can interact with local small museums, town historians, and genealogy groups. A full listing of participating people and organizations can be found on the website.

The site will also host a Cast Iron Cook-off in its historic homes. This program will take place on Saturday, October 17 from 10 am to 2 pm. Our historic interpreters will be put to the test and compete using secret ingredients. Cooks in our historic buildings will learn their ingredients in the morning, then prep a dish or a meal for our team of judges. Surprise ingredients will be delivered to their sites throughout the day as well; otherwise they may only use what they already have on hand. Judges will visit sites in the afternoon to evaluate taste, presentation, and historical value.

For more information about the Neighbor’s Free Weekend and associated programs, visit ManitowocCountyHistory.org or call (920) 684-4445. For non-Manitowoc County residents, general admission is $15 for adults, $13 for seniors, $10 for youth age 4 to 17, and free for children under 4 years old. MCHS Members always receive free general admission.

About the Manitowoc County Historical Society Museum and Pinecrest Village
Nestled in the scenic rolling Ice Age Kettle Moraine countryside of Eastern Wisconsin, the Manitowoc County Historical Society is a museum of living history. This 60-acre interpretive museum of local history features a Welcome Center with local history exhibits and research services and the outdoor Pinecrest Historical Village - a collection of over 25 historic buildings with period furnishings from Manitowoc County's early settlers.

Pinecrest Historical Village began in 1970 with a land donation from the Hugo and Eleanor Vetting family.  The Village has grown to represent a reproduction of a small Wisconsin community during the early 1900s. The buildings form the commercial, social, and political core of a town and they represent several architectural styles of Wisconsin's history. The furnishings, items, and tools in the various buildings used by the Pinecrest Village interpreters are either original pieces or carefully researched reproductions.
