Historical Society offers program on June 20 focusing on Emancipation and Juneteenth

The Manitowoc County Historical Society Museum and Pinecrest Village, 924 Pinecrest Road in Manitowoc, will hold a themed program on Friday, June 20 from 10 am to 2 pm focusing on the history of Emancipation and background on Juneteenth. 
Explore the history and context around the Juneteenth holiday in the United States. Topics explored will include the history of racial injustice in the U.S., the Civil War and the limitations of the Emancipation Proclamation. Additionally, we encourage groups to explore the modern significance of Juneteenth and its long-term impact. As part of this experience guests will: Learn about the only African American Civil War unit credited to Wisconsin: Company F, 29th Infantry Unit, United States Colored Troops; Take part in Emancipation celebrations; and Follow the story of Company “D” 27th Wisconsin, who was there for the liberation of Texas and has ties to our community.
The program is open to the public with hands-on education stations geared to homeschool and school age students. About the Manitowoc County Historical Society
Nestled in the scenic rolling Ice Age Kettle Moraine countryside of Eastern Wisconsin, the Manitowoc County Historical Society is a museum of living history. This 60-acre interpretive museum of local history features a Welcome Center with local history exhibits and research services and the outdoor Pinecrest Historical Village - a collection of over 25 historic buildings with period furnishings from Manitowoc County's early settlers. 
 
Pinecrest Historical Village began in 1970 with a land donation from the Hugo and Eleanor Vetting family.  The Village has grown to represent a reproduction of a small Wisconsin community during the early 1900s. The buildings form the commercial, social, and political core of a town and they represent several architectural styles of Wisconsin's history. The furnishings, items, and tools in the various buildings used by the Pinecrest Village interpreters are either original pieces or carefully researched reproductions.
