At the Manitowoc County Historical Society in February: Winter Weekend, Heritage Skills workshops, and Remarkable Homes program

 
Here's what is happening at the Manitowoc County Historical Society, 924 Pinecrest Road in Manitowoc, in February: 
  • Mending 101: Repairs for the Thrifty Person; Thursday, February 6 from 5 to 7 pm at MCHS; Explore two mending techniques for woven (non-stretchy) fabrics, like jeans. In a modern era of fast fashion, you’ll want to join in this thrifty person’s guide to repairing your clothes and other popular items. Bring an item to mend and give it new life. Advanced registration required and fee charged.
  • Winter Weekend; Saturday, February 15 from 11 am to 3 pm at MCHS; Enjoy these winter weekends by exploring a handful of historic buildings in the Village, embrace the winter by snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or sledding, and enjoy the season!  February will focus on Victorian Era romance and weather permitting, will include a sleigh rally. Activities will include a program on Victorian era dress and hands on winter activities. Winter Weekends are made possible in part by Seehafer News. General admission.
  • Valentine's Day Blacksmith Hearts workshop; Saturday, February 15 from 12 Noon until 3 pm at MCHS; We will cover some of the basics of forging steel and move on to making hearts that you can share with your special valentine. Advanced registration is required and fee charged. 
  • Victorian Era Decorative Boxes workshop; Saturday, February 15 from 12 Noon until 3 pm at MCHS; Create your very own Victorian Era decorative box, combined with a winter or romance theme. This paper board and hand sewn box is perfect for memorabilia, jewelry, trinkets, photos, desk box, phone holder or hostess gift. Advanced registration is required and fee charged. 
  • Manitowoc County’s Remarkable Homes: Hungry for History Series program; Wednesday, February 19 at 11 am at Branch Station; Manitowoc County’s Remarkable Homes tells the story of the considerable contribution local historic homes have made to our community’s architecture. It also answers questions you've likely asked when you've seen a notable historic home: Who built this house? What brought them here? Why did they select that particular style? Meal to follow presentation. Advanced registration is required and fee charged. 
  • Community Craft Night; Thursday, February 20 from 5 to 7 pm at MCHS; Do you knit, crochet, sew, quilt, draw, paint, scrapbook, embroider, whittle, or anything else? Bring something to work on while you enjoy community engagement! Meet other crafters and artisans in your community, and maybe even pick up a new skill. Each month we will be bringing out a item from our archives collection to enjoy and inspire you in your own work! FREE to attend.
  • History Detectives: Themed Field Trip; Thursday, February 27 from 10 am - 2 pm at MCHS; Let's figure out a history mystery by exploring behind the scenes at a museum. The program is targeted to students in Grades K-12. Advanced registration is required and fee charged.

About the Manitowoc County Historical Society
Nestled in the scenic rolling Ice Age Kettle Moraine countryside of Eastern Wisconsin, the Manitowoc County Historical Society is a museum of living history. This 60-acre interpretive museum of local history features a Welcome Center with local history exhibits and research services and the outdoor Pinecrest Historical Village - a collection of over 25 historic buildings with period furnishings from Manitowoc County's early settlers. 
 
Pinecrest Historical Village began in 1970 with a land donation from the Hugo and Eleanor Vetting family.  The Village has grown to represent a reproduction of a small Wisconsin community during the early 1900s. The buildings form the commercial, social, and political core of a town and they represent several architectural styles of Wisconsin's history. The furnishings, items, and tools in the various buildings used by the Pinecrest Village interpreters are either original pieces or carefully researched reproductions.
