Adult Book Discussion: Lula Dean’s Little Library of Banned Books, by Kirsten Miller
Thursday, July 17, 6-7 PM
Beverly Underwood and her archenemy, Lula Dean, live in the tiny town of Troy, Georgia, where they were born and raised. Beverly is now on the school board, while Lula has become a local celebrity by embarking on a mission to rid the public libraries of all inappropriate books—none of which she has read. Lula starts a lending library in front of her home: a cute wooden hutch with glass doors and neat rows of the worthy literature that she is sure the town’s readers need. Beverly’s daughter has other plans. She sneaks in at night and fills Lula's lending library with banned books, disguising them in wholesome jackets. When neighbors borrow these books, life in little Troy, Georgia, changes forever! If tales of small town intrigue pique your interest, meet fellow book lovers for an engaging conversation in MPL’s Second Floor Board Room from 6-7 PM on Thursday, July 17. Pick up your copy of “Lula Dean’s Little Library” near the First Floor’s Service Desk.

This drop-in program will run for 2 hours (while supplies last). No registration is required. In the event of inclement weather, this program will be rescheduled for Tuesday, August 12.

Brew ‘N Bee V: Unleash the Hive!                                                  Wednesday, July 23, 6-8 PM

Let’s be honest, folks. There’s a time and place for subtle, reserved discourse between like-minded scholars to be exchanged in a reasonable manner. And then there’s the Brew ‘N Bee at PetSkull Brewing Co., LLC, where semi-contained “intelligent” tomfoolery is allowed to run its course, unleashed to swarm all those in attendance with a less-than-subtle blend of smarts and yowling bravado! Manitowoc Public Library and PetSkull Brewing Company, LLC, will once again join forces to present “Brew ‘N Bee V: Unleash the Hive!’” This annual orthographic scrum in PetSkull’s outdoor Beer Garden takes place on Wednesday, July 23, at 6 PM. As before, this will be a Single Elimination event, so if you spell a word wrong, you’re out! However, “Cheats” will again be available for purchase beforehand the day of the Bee to help keep you in the competition should a misspelling occur. A $20 participation fee will be associated with the Brew ‘N Bee and registration is required. It should be noted that all proceeds from the purchase of Cheats and the registration fee (once minor expenses are met) will be donated to Friends of Manitowoc Public Library. Space is Limited, Registration is Required, and this is an Adults-Only (21-and-over) event. Head to www.manitowoclibrary.org/event/brew-n-bee-v to register and for complete details. PLEASE NOTE: While registration for this event takes place online, payment of the $20 Registration Fee must be made at PetSkull Brewing Company IN CASH prior to the start of the Brew N’ Bee on July 23.
